Ireland, the number 1 destination for Tech Firms
At present Ireland has the following:
- 9 of the top 10 global software companies.
- 9 of the top 10 US technology companies.
- The top 3 enterprise software companies.
- 4 of the top 5 IT services companies.
Reasons why multinationals, particularly in the Tech industry, find Ireland such a great place to do business may be due to a combination of economic, strategic, and cultural factors. Here are some of the key reasons why I believe Ireland is a favoured location for tech industry giants:
Low Corporate Tax Rates: Ireland has one of the lowest corporate tax rates in Europe, which is commonly referred to as the "Irish Corporate Tax Advantage." Many internet companies trying to reduce their tax obligations have been drawn to this low rate (12.5% for trading income).
English-Speaking Environment: Ireland is a country where more than 90 percent of people speak English, which is an enormous benefit for tech companies who do business worldwide and operate in English as their primary business language.
Accessibility to the European Union (EU): Ireland's EU membership opens up a market of over 450 million consumers to information and technology companies, without the trade restrictions and tariffs that can be encountered in other areas.
Educated Population: Ireland now has a 98%, highest in Europe, participation rate in education amongst 18 year old's. The Irish education system is ranked 6th in the world while computer science and coding subjects being available at secondary level education.
Research and Development: Ireland places a significant emphasis on research and development in order to innovate and create new technologies. Many IT corporations work with local colleges and research organisation's in order to remain at the forefront of research and development. Ireland is ranked amongst the top 10 most innovative EU countries, also ranking top 15 in the world including 1st for knowledge diffusion.
Tech Ecosystem: The technological ecosystem in Ireland continues to expand with clusters of technological companies, startups, and investors. Dublin along with other tech centres have attracted talent and encouraged industry innovation.
Data Privacy: As GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is applicable throughout the EU, Ireland's strong data protection regulations make it a perfect location for tech companies that handle sensitive customer data.
Government Support: The Irish government actively supports foreign direct investment (FDI) through agencies like IDA Ireland, which provides assistance and incentives to companies considering Ireland as a base of operations.
Tech Hub Community: The presence of large tech companies like Apple, google, Facebook and Microsoft in Ireland create a sense of community in the tech industry and thus encourage collaboration and innovation within.
Digital Quality of life: Ireland is number 24 when it comes to digital quality of life (DQL), up four places on its ranking last year. This is according to a report which measures and ranks the DQL of 110 countries worldwide.
To summarise; Irelands strategic location, skilled workforce and access to the EU, among other reasons, make it an ideal destination for tech giants to set up shop. This combination of factors puts Ireland among the top choice for tech giants who are seeking to establish a presence in the Europe and beyond.
